Purchasing a brand new couch is always a reason of joy. The excitement of deciding the fabric, the choice of the colors, and the smell of the new leather couch… shopping for furniture is fantastic!

Now you have time to relax on your new couch and you can enjoy it every time you read the morning newspaper. It’s so good looking when it’s new, colors are alive and the fabric is clean and smooth!

However, it comes a time when your couch becomes like an old buddy that has lost its charm. It’s old fashioned, boring, even torn apart. I remember when I could read some significant events in my life on my couch: my first cat ‘Purry’ and its sharp claws, the day when Francesca, my daughter, threw up for the first time, or the last Saturday’s game with the guys, with fish & chips. I wish I could hide away those marks, and a slipcover is my escape.

Decisions, decisions… First thing you have to do is choose the material of your slip cover. Silk, cotton, polyester, linen or ramie are some of the most popular fabrics used for manufacturing slipcovers. What I like the most is that whenever the slipcover gets dirty, I can easily remove it from the couch and wash it in my washing machine.

Take note that the system used to attach the slipcover on the couch needs to be easy to handle; you don’t want to spend an entre day to take it off the couch.
In case you have hairy pets, choose a material that doesn’t attract the hair; it will be easier to maintain.

Slipcovers are not only for protecting your couch from spots and dirt, they are also a mean to decorate the room, and so if you get tired from the aspect of the couch, you can change it in a snap by putting on another slipcover.

A friend of mine likes to change slipcovers according to the season. She purchased a slipcover with red reindeers and green Christmas trees that she uses for the winter holidays. It practically changes the aspect of the entire house!

Where can you find slipcovers?

It is hard to find a slipcover that matches exactly your couch, but in case you have a common model, there are chances to find one that fits. Furniture stores also sell slipcovers for many of their couch models, so you can give them call. A cheaper option is to buy your own fabric and have it made by a local tailoring store, especially if you have a unique couch model.

In case your couch has some decorative pillows, and I’m sure you have some, remember to use the same fabric as the slipcover to give hem a new look. But if you get to this point, you can be creative and create contrasts of colors and textures: use silk, velvet or cotton for the ‘new’ pillow. The effect will be modern and eye-catching.

To be honest, slipcovers are even better than the original cover of my old couch. They are versatile, easy to clean and much cheaper than a brand new couch.

Five Steps to Choose a Small Apartment Couch

Oh, how I love living in big cities! New York, Miami or Paris are some of the top places where I would like to rent an apartment. Unfortunately, this great experience can be costly, even if we are talking about renting a small apartment. Whether you live in the Big Apple or in a smaller city, you still have to decorate your apartment, and I like to believe that the piece of furniture that gives the style of the house is the couch.
Ok, so let’s choose a couch for your small apartment. Take it like a test of your organizational abilities, because there are many things you need to consider. The good news is that a smaller couch is a cheap couch. Shopping for furniture is fun unless you need to find a comfy couch that fits your apartment door. Given the fact that this will be the centerpiece of the living room, and perhaps the most used, the pressure of choosing the best couch can be high.

Just imagine the following situations: your couch should be comfortable enough for an afternoon sleep or a baseball night with the friends. On the other hand, if you have kids or pets, it must be easy to clean and maintain. I know you have a lot to think of but we’ll do it together. Couch shopping should follow some simple steps:

1.Measurements
You need a measuring tape and a piece of paper. There are two measurements you need for choosing a couch that fits a smaller living: the size (length) of the couch and the width of the door(s). The couch needs to fit the area you have selected, but it also needs to fit the entrance door. In case you have found a perfect couch that doesn’t fit the door, at least make sure there are parts that can be dismantled.

2.The usage level depends on how much the couch will be actually used.
Some prefer to choose a couch that matches with the rest of the furniture while others are more practical and select a comfy couch that fits their lifestyle (to be used by kids, friends, for watching TV).

3.The type of fabric is closely related to the level of usage.
If your couch is used on a daily basis, leather and microfibers are recommended, due to their resistance and easy maintenance. Natural fibers and cotton look great are less resistant to the wear and tear and spots are more difficult to remove.

4.The structure is another important aspect to consider when buying a new couch.
Choose couches with hardwood structure not pine, for example, which is less resistant in time.

5.Style
Style often seems the first criteria for choosing a comfy couch, but I consider it’s the last, not less important. Try to combine style with functionality; it’s the best option for decorating a small apartment. It doesn’t matter if you choose an expensive, modern couch or a cheap couch with traditional design. The couch expresses your unique style and will represent you for years to come.

One last tip: remember to buy a couch that blends with your living and doesn’t dominate the rest of the furniture.

I was initially upset about the quality when I found out that the feet were actually pieces of plastic that you screw in. Also, the leather is very thin. HOWEVER, once we put it together and put it in place we were sold. It looks great, it is very comfortable.
One word of caution: It was MUCH larger than I thought. I took the couch measurement to be the whole length of the back, when in actuality It did not include the Chaise end. So when we put it together it was 3 ft. longer than we had planned for. Luckily it still fit and now our whole family can hang out in comfort! So, just pay attention to the dimensions and realize you are adding the chaise width to the sofa length.

The fabric is great, and matches perfectly with another burgundy ultrasuede piece I have. I like ultrasuede because my cats don’t like scratching it, and while it’s a hair magnet, the hair doesn’t get embedded in the fabric, but comes off easily with a lint roller.

This slipcover fits pretty well for a slipcover, but it’s not as perfect as it looks in the picture. I have a chair on the small side of the range it specifies, so the slipcover is a bit big. The elastic helps, but it tends to push the seat cushion forward. I added some more elastic by tying a big piece of elastic around the bottom of the seat cushion (including the front) and this helps keep it tight around the seat cushion, and keeps the seat cushion in place. I recommend that little hack.
